Scope

This International Standard defines the professional terms throughout the entire industrial chain of the coalbed methane (CBM) industry, with core coverage of four categories: geology and exploration, engineering and construction, development and production, safety and environmental protection. It clarifies the definitions and connotations of each term, and is applicable to technical exchanges, engineering practices, standard formulation, international trade and cooperation, and other related activities in the global coalbed methane sector.

Purpose

This Standard aims to establish a globally unified terminology system for coalbed methane (CBM) exploration and development, clarify the definitions, connotations and application scenarios of core terms in each link, and provide fundamental support for industrial technical exchanges, international cooperation and the formulation of specialized standards. With the successful practice of deep CBM development technologies, the limitations of the current standard have become increasingly prominent, making it urgent to revise and improve the terminology system.

The existing International Standard Coalbed methane exploration and development — Terms and definitions (ISO 18875:2015(E)), published in 2015, provides standardized term definitions for the geology, exploration, engineering construction, gas field development and production of shallow-tomedium depth CBM. However, deep CBM has become an important replacement field for unconventional natural gas, and the existing International Standard is only applicable to shallow-tomedium depth CBM scenarios, failing to meet the demand for deep CBM development.

The proposed revised standard fully addresses the terminology standardization needs for both shallowto- medium depth and deep CBM exploration and development, combining universality with technical advancement. Its implementation will play a significant role in raising the international standardization level of the CBM industry and promoting scientific and technological exchanges as well as economic and trade cooperation in this field globally. With the popularization of deep CBM development technologies and the growing divergence in technical specifications among various countries, the later the revision work is launched, the higher the difficulty and cost of subsequent coordination and unification will be. Therefore, this standard revision is of great urgency and necessity.
