This document specifies a test method and the disclosure of results for quantifying the surface shear properties of wheelchair seat cushions using a standardized buttock model and a shear sensor.
Standards exist for measures of interface pressure and of friction between a test dummy and a support surface. Skin tissue damage also arises from shear strain arising from the resulting forces on the skin. Research has been carried out (and reported in a peer-reviewed publication: Quantitative Measurement of Local Shear Forces at the Wheelchair Seat Cushion-Buttock Interface toward Standardization) to establish a test method for measuring shear forces at the interface between a test dummy and a support surface using a commercially available shear sensor at the interface. The proposed standard specifies the test method and the disclosure of results for quantifying the surface shear properties of wheelchair seat cushions using a standardized buttock model and a shear sensor
