Scope

This document provides a method for separation, collection, and determination of trace magnetic impurities in oxide ceramic powders.

This document applies to the determination of the total content of magnetic impurities (iron, cobalt, chromium, nickel, and zinc) between 0,005 and 20 mg/kg which can be attracted by magnet. This document is applicable to oxide ceramic powders such as zirconia (ZrO2) and alumina (Al2O3). It can also serve as a reference for the separation and determination of trace magnetic impurities in other non-oxide ceramic powders.

Purpose

Oxide ceramic powders such as ZrO2 and Al2O3 are widely used as additives in lithium-ion battery electrode materials, as they can significantly enhance the battery’s cycle stability and energy density. However, presence of trace magnetic impurities (even at ppb levels) in electrode materials can induce safety hazards such as internal short circuits, fires, or even explosions. Therefore, the accurate determination of trace magnetic impurity content in oxide ceramic powders is crucial for ensuring the safety and performance of energy storage devices.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) is a mature and precise technique for measuring trace element concentrations. However, the typical Limit of Detection (LOD) for trace magnetic elements (e.g., Fe) in solid powders is approximately 1–3 ppm, which is insufficient for analysing ppb-level concentrations. Therefore, pre-concentration via separation and collection of magnetic substances is necessary to improve sensitivity prior to measurement. Regrettably, no standardized method currently exists for this separation, collection and determination process for trace magnetic impurities in oxide ceramic powders. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an evaluation method as an ISO standard.

This document introduces a method for the separation, collection, and determination of magnetic impurity content in oxide ceramic powders using ICP-OES. It is expected to provide effective support for better quality control of oxide ceramic powders used as electrode materials.
