Scope

Focusing on the product carbon footprint quantification methods for upstream lithium raw materials, primarily battery-grade lithium carbonate, battery-grade lithium hydroxide, and battery-grade lithium chloride, while also applicable to lithium concentrate and lithium sulfate. It provides the scope definition, system boundary, functional unit, and carbon footprint allocation methods for main and by-products.

Purpose

Against the urgent global backdrop of addressing climate change, greenhouse gas emission management has become a mainstream global consensus. According to the Paris Agreement and the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, global greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to within 1.5°C.

The lithium industry and lithium products, as crucial industries and products in the global effort to combat climate change, have experienced rapid development in recent years with a trend of continued growth. Determining the carbon footprint of its products is beneficial for the industry to quantify and manage its own carbon emissions. It also helps the entire industrial chain, especially end consumers, to understand and choose products that are more effective in addressing climate change.

Based on the characteristics of the lithium industry, it can be broadly divided into upstream mining and production of lithium raw materials, midstream production of cathode and anode materials and electrolytes, downstream production and application of lithium-ion batteries, and end-of-life recycling and regeneration of lithium resources. Currently, within the ISO framework, there is no standard for quantifying the carbon footprint of lithium raw materials.

This standard will assist professionals in conducting Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) assessments in a standardized manner for key lithium intermediates produced from salt lake brines, hard-rock lithium ores, and battery recycling, as well as for battery-grade lithium carbonate, battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate, and battery-grade anhydrous lithium chloride specialty chemicals, based on Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA). This will serve to measure the green and low-carbon performance of production enterprises and their products.

Simultaneously, this standard will address the following issues present in international trade:

1. Lithium compound products derived from lithium battery recycling also require a clear carbon footprint quantification methodology.

2. The lithium industry is evolving rapidly, with new trade commodities emerging in some regions, such as lithium sulfate products under regulations in Africa.

3, Metallic lithium, a primary raw material for next-generation batteries, is produced from battery-grade anhydrous lithium chloride. Clarifying its carbon footprint will aid in quantifying the carbon footprint of next-generation battery products.

4. Existing standards lack clear requirements for the allocation of co-products. This proposal will further quantify the contribution to climate change mitigation for compounds containing nickel, cobalt, and manganese.
