Purpose

ISO TC173 WG1 Assistive products for walking as well as CEN TC 293 have reviewed and reached the conclusion that General requirements and test methods for the family of assistive products for walking shall be created as ISO standard revising EN 1985:1998 Assistive products — General requirements and test methods. Although WG1 developed ISO standards for some assistive products for walking, there are many other assistive products for walking that the standards have not yet been set for. And, various kinds of assistive products for walking with new idea and advanced technology including electric/power assist functions which have been developed and being introduced into the global market continuously.

This standard, “General requirements and test methods for assistive products for walking” could be a useful guideline for manufacturers to develop and design safe assistive products for walking with new technologies as well as safe traditional type products that don’t have the standards for. Please note that EN 1985:1998 currently is removed from M/ 575 according to CEN/TC 293 meeting decision in 2024. If the NWIP is approved, CEN TC 293 will need to take a new decision on reinstating the standard again in the mandate.
