Scope

This document defines the functional and technical requirements for exterior visible warning devices for urban rail vehicles as defined in the CEN-CENELEC Guide 26, i.e. metro systems, trams, light rail, and local rail systems.

This document also defines the requirements for testing and conformity assessment.

NOTE The requirements for exterior visible warning devices for heavy rail vehicles are found in EN 15153–1.

Purpose

The revision of EN 15153-3:2020 is required on the following basis:

 Comments received in the recent Ballot results.

 In order to address certain issues before EN 15153-3 may be migrated to a new ISO Standard.

 Noting that EN15153-3 is a mature Standard which has been working well for many years, but needs some minor improvements before being migrated to ISO, the revision to be a ‘light-touch’ in line with the WG09 Decision 4 made on 15-Sept-2025.

CEN/TC 256/SC 3/WG 09 proposes the normal CEN process (24m timeframe) for this revision.
