Scope

This document defines a test method of acid value for encapsulants used in photovoltaic (PV) module, using colorimetric titration.

PV modules that have been operating outdoors for a long time, as well as PV modules and mini laminates after accelerated aging, can use this method to test the acid value of the encapsulant material in the PV modules and laminates.

Purpose

Degradation of PV modules is known to occur in part by chemical corrosion, or other potential induced corrosion processes. These chemical corrosion may be dependent upon the acidic components generated by the encapsulants used in photovoltaic (PV) module. The acid value may be affected by material component, operating environment (temperature, humidity, UV light), and time etc.

The test method described in this document may be used by material manufacturers for the purpose of material durability research and development, as well as for quality control. PV module manufacturers may use this method for material selection, application in module reliability design, or failure analysis.
