Scope

This standard specifies a dynamic continuous flow and in-line detection method to evaluate the performance of photocatalytic inorganic materials contained in cement and/or lime mortars or ceramic based matrices, paints or materials deposited as thin films or coatings on a variety of substrates for the photocatalytic abatement of Toluene in the gaseous phase. This method also applies to samples used with flow perpendicular to the surface or flow permeating the surface, such as polymer and paper filters, honeycomb structures and the like using the described sample holder.

The performance of the photocatalytic sample under examination is evaluated by measuring the degradation rate of toluene and detectable volatile VOCs possibly produced in the photocatalytic process according to the method specified here using the CSTR reactor already used in the UNI EN 16980-1 standard method, which allows the calculation of the photocatalytic abatement rate from conversion observed by eliminating mass transfer effects and reactor parameters. The surface-normalized photocatalytic abatement rate is a property of the tested material and allows distinguishing the photocatalytic activities of various samples on an absolute scale with physical and engineering significance.

Purpose

Filling the regulatory gap inherent in the photocatalysis market.

A standard on this topic has already been published in Italy as UNI 11986 and will therefore be based on this.
