This document covers the fundamental principles for the simplified design and analysis of segmental precast box girder bridges, the associated loads and load combinations, the design specifications, the section detailing requirements, the types of segmental bridges, and the construction equipment.
The construction of segmental precast concrete box girder bridges allows repetitive construction procedures, imposes very small impact to the environment, and permits economical and rapid construction. Such bridges can go over natural hazards and community landmarks, and fit into complex horizontal and vertical alignments, e.g., curved highway access ramps and large-radius bridges. Therefore, segmental precast concrete box girder bridges play an essential role in the transportation system.
The design and analysis of segmental precast concrete box girder bridges that are constructed by the span-by-span method is more complicated than the traditional concrete box girder bridges that are completed by full staging method. The design and analysis procedure must account for the construction phase prior to the final completion phase, due to the locked-in stresses that are induced to the structural system during the construction phase. Special attentions shall be paid to the characteristics of the precast segments during the transportation, lifting, and handling stages. Therefore, it is necessary to draft an independent document which is specifically for the simplified design and analysis of segmental precast concrete box girder bridges.
The aim of this International Standard is to provide rules for the design and construction of segmental precast concrete box girder bridges that are constructed by the span-by-span method. This document is developed for countries that do not have existing national standards on this subject and to offer local regulatory authorities an alternative for the design of this type of bridges that abound in urban overpasses and over creeks and rivers everywhere. The design rules are based on simplified worldwide-accepted strength models. This document is self-contained; therefore, loads, simplified analysis procedures, and design specifications are included, as well as minimum acceptable construction practice guidelines. This document shall not be used in place of a national standard unless specifically considered and accepted by the national standards body or other appropriate regulatory organization.
