Scope

This document specifies the terms and definitions, requirements, and test methods for polyolefin separators of lithium-ion batteries. This document applies to base separators and coated separators for lithium-ion batteries with polyolefin resin as raw material, the separator using other materials can refer to this document.

Purpose

The separator is known as the "third electrode" in a battery, with its core function being to prevent physical contact between the cathode and anode, thereby avoiding short circuits. Polyolefin separators dominate the market of lithium-ion batteries due to their excellent mechanical properties and chemical stability. At present, there is no international standard related to polyolefin separator of lithium-ion batteries. The primary purpose of this international standard is to establish a unified, global framework for evaluating the quality, safety, and performance of polyolefin separators used in lithium-ion batteries. The specific purpose and justification are: To Establish a Global Benchmark for Quality and Safety: Create a set of globally recognized, scientific, and reproducible test methods for key separator properties (e.g., air permeability, porosity, puncture strength, thermal shrinkage). This allows for direct and fair comparison of products from different manufacturers worldwide. To Enhance Intrinsic Battery Safety: Mitigate the risk of internal short circuits and thermal runaway by defining stringent and consistent criteria for separator integrity and performance, thereby improving the fundamental safety of lithium-ion cells. To Ensure Cell Consistency and Reliability: Improve the performance uniformity of battery packs by specifying critical tolerances for separator properties like thickness uniformity and pore structure, which directly impact cycle life and energy density. To Facilitate Global Trade and Cooperation: Eliminate technical barriers to trade caused by divergent regional or corporate standards, enabling separator suppliers to serve a global market and cell manufacturers to streamline their global supply chain.
