Scope

This document provides guidance for aspects of the playspace, including access and egress to the space as well as amenities that can provide benefit to all users depending upon the complexity of the space and their ability.

This document can be used in conjunction with ISO 4980 to recognize and document the accessibility benefits of a playspace project. This document does not deal with the design, layout or surfacing aspects of playgrounds as covered in various national and international safety standards that are intended to reduce injuries on playgrounds.

Purpose

During the development of the Technical Report ISO/CD TR 24869 “Inclusive play areas”, it was determined that it is necessary to issue recommendations and requirements. The content exceeds the scope offered by ISO with a TR, which is why the proposal is submitted to convert the project into a Technical Specification (TS). Attached is the corresponding Form 04 for this purpose.

Historically, individuals with disabilities have often been excluded or limited to separate offers. A Technical Specification is essential to ensure that these integrative practices are uniformly, benefiting the entire community and promoting positive social and cultural outcomes. This Technical Specification will serve as guidance to support the implementation of such practices.

The following key benefits are identified:

1. Social Benefits: It promotes the inclusion of individuals with varied abilities, aligning with the societal demand for equality and participation. This leads to an enhanced quality of life for people with disabilities by providing improved access to leisure and play opportunities.

2. Economic Benefits: This Technical Specification offers business-friendly guidance for decisionmakers to remove potential barriers and tap into new market segments.

3. Environmental Benefits: The guidance may include sustainable practices to ensure that leisure facilities meet environmental requirements while remaining accessible and usable for all. This supports the integration of sustainability principles in the design process.

These benefits help address the overarching issue of the lack of inclusion of individuals with different abilities in play and recreation environments. This Technical Specification would provide guidance for integrative practices and fulfill the societal demand for equality and access. By considering the various aspects within the project scope, the specification offers comprehensive support for developing accessible and socially responsible play and recreation environments
