This part of IEC 61158 specifies the requirements for Type 2 fieldbus component parts. It also specifies the media and network configuration requirements necessary to ensure agreed levels of
a) data integrity before data-link layer error checking;
b) interoperability between devices at the physical layer.
The fieldbus physical layer conforms to layer 1 of the OSI 7-layer model as defined by ISO/IEC 7498 with the exception that, for some types, frame delimiters are in the physical layer while for other types they are in the data-link layer.
Resolution #2024-02 from Decision List 65C/1324/DL of the 2024 SC65C Plenary allows for IEC 61158-2 to be transformed into a sub-series, with each sub-part corresponding to a Type. The addition of a new seven-conductor, flat Ethernet physical layer medium for Type 2 therefore requires this document (IEC 61158-2-2) to be created. It contains the existing Type 2 portions found in IEC 61158-2:2023, as well as new content related to the new flat Ethernet medium.
