Throughout the entire lifecycle of bitumen waterproofing sheets, from production and construction to service life and final disposal, waste generation will occur.
This document provides guidance on design for recycling and methods to calculate recycled content from pre-consumer material and post-consumer material as it is used in the production of new products. These new products may be bituminous sheets, other construction bituminous products or other bituminous products (e.g. primers).
NOTE This document is applicable for similar products as construction sheets or membranes consisting of bitumen, polymers or plastic components such as: geosynthetic membranes, membranes for road constructions and bridge decks, protection membranes.
With the European Commission implementing decision M/584 of 01/08/2022 a standardisation request is launched to the European Committee for Standardisation and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation as regards plastics recycling and recycled plastics in support of the European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy.
Similar to that standardisation request CEN/TC254/SC 1 wants to develop a European standard on bitumen recycling and recycled bitumen for bitumen waterproofing sheets. This standard would cover the typical waterproofing systems, the collection of bitumen sheets to be recycled, the characterization of the bitumen recyclate, the quality assurance of the bitumen recyclate and the recycled content.
