New Work Item Proposal on cathodic protection of internal surfaces of metallic tanks, structures, equipment and piping containing seawater VA ISO lead ISO 26194

Scope

This document specifies the requirements and recommendations for cathodic protection systems applied to the internal surfaces of metallic tanks, structures, equipment and piping containing natural or treated seawater or brackish waters to provide an efficient protection from corrosion. Cathodic protection inside fresh water systems is excluded from this document.

Purpose

An international standard for protection of internal surfaces is crucial to the industry using sea water piping systems, heat exchangers and sea water capacities. Existing EN 17243:2020 is a useful standard but there are requirements that should be updated. For example, there are requirements for negative potentials for titanium tubes and recent studies on this topic must be taken into account. Also, ISO 24656 for Cathodic Protection of Offshore Wind structures has recently been issued: the adequacy of the two documents must be insured.
