Scope

This part of IEC 62565 establishes a standardized method to determine a Blank Detail Specification (BDS) for.

– secondary lithium-based batteries This blank detail specification is intended for applications in electromobility, consumer electronics, energy and grid storage, industrial systems, aerospace, and medical devices, where performance, safety, and lifecycle characteristics are critical.

– A core focus of this specification is the precise characterization and specification of materials, which serves as a critical performance assessment tool. This enables the optimization of battery components, ensures their suitability for intended applications, and is essential for enhancing performance, ensuring safety and reliability, streamlining the supply chain, and driving innovation

– This blank detail specification provides a framework to characterize key control characteristics (KCCs) for assessing battery performance, including capacity, efficiency, and cycle stability.

– This blank detail specification guides manufacturers and suppliers in developing detail specifications tailored to specific use cases by standardizing the documentation and measurement of KCCs, ensuring consistency across product descriptions and procurement processes.

– Numeric values for the key control characteristics are left blank as they will be specified between customer and supplier in the detail specification (DS). In the DS, KCCs may be added or removed if agreed upon by both parties.

Purpose

This Blank Detail Specification (BDS) standard provides a comprehensive framework for characterizing and standardizing a wide range of lithium-based batteries. It begins with established lithium-ion batteries and extends to emerging technologies, including those still in the research phase. By creating a unified BDS for these battery types which provides a standardized way how to write the technical specification for these products, the standard aims to support consistency in evaluation and comparison of electrochemical performance, safety, and lifecycle characteristics across lithium-based batteries with similar underlying electrochemical principles.
