Scope

This document specifies a method for the determination of free acid content of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) by potentiometric titration.

This document is applicable to the determination of free acid (expressed as hydrofluoric acid) in LiPF6 product within the range from 20 mg/kg to 2000 mg/kg. The limit of detection is 20 mg/kg.

Purpose

Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) is mainly used as electrolyte lithium salt for lithium-ion battery and lithium-ion supercapacitor.Free acid in LiPF is mainly hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is generated from residues during production and the hydrolysis of LiPF. Free acid can corrode the cathode and anode electrodes materials of lithium-ion batteries and damage the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, thereby reducing battery performance. Therefore, the free acid content in LiPF product is an important indicator for monitoring LiPF6 product quality.
