Scope

This international standard specifies the test method for the compatibility of solid insulation materials with functional liquids while maintaining the safety and performance of electrical equipment. The objective of the document is to clarify the evaluation methodology and suggested qualification criteria for the compatibility between solid electrical insulation materials and functional liquids, such as for lubrication and heat dissipation, etc. In scope are scenarios where the functional liquids are in direct contact with the solid insulation materials.

Several qualification criteria have been suggested as thresholds for compatibility risks. The evaluation process specified in this document focuses on the chemical compatibility between insulation materials and functional liquids but does not provide a long-term thermal or aging evaluation.

Purpose

The need for this document arises from the increasing use of liquid cooling of electrical equipment for maximizing power density, such as in an e-drive motor.

This document ensures to the global electrical equipment industry the compatibility of solid insulation materials with functional liquids, measured by consistent and accepted industry procedures. This provides the suppliers, manufacturers and customers with a sound basis for comparing the selected solid insulation materials and functional liquids appropriate to their specific needs.

To avoid mechanical, electrical and chemical failure for insulation materials, such as impregnating resins, prefabricates, wire insulation etc., the test methods described in this standard can be applied to different liquid- immersed electrical equipment, including liquid-cooled rotating machines used in electrical vehicles, electro- hydrostatic actuator for aircraft, oil pumps and bushing.

The NWIP assumes that IEC 63177 becomes a series of standards, with the current edition of IEC 63177 becoming IEC 63177-1 by next revision, which could be targeted for end of 2028 in alignment with the release of IEC 63177-2.

The objective of both IEC 63177-1 and IEC 63177-2 is to set procedures and criteria for chemical compatibility test between solids and liquids applied for electrical equipment. Part 1 focuses on the evaluation methodology between construction materials and electrical insulating liquids. Part 2 deals with the evaluation methodology between solid electrical insulation materials and functional liquids.
