PNW 65C-1377 ED1: Industrial networks – Fieldbus specifications – Part 2-0: Physical layer specification and service definition – General concepts and terminology

Scope

The IEC 61158-2 series specify the requirements for fieldbus component parts. It also specifies the media and network configuration requirements necessary to ensure agreed levels of

a) data integrity before data-link layer error checking;

b) interoperability between devices at the physical layer.

The fieldbus physical layer conforms to layer 1 of the OSI 7-layer model as defined by ISO/IEC 7498 with the exception that, for some types, frame delimiters are in the physical layer while for other types they are in the data-link layer.

This part of IEC 61158-2 series defines a common terminology for all Types. It also provides an overview of the structure and contents of the Types in the IEC 61158-2 series.

Purpose

This document initiates the IEC 61158-2 series, as announced in the SC65C plenary 09/2024 (65C/1324/DL) and outcome of the SC65C/WG9 meeting in February 2025, to transform the 61158-2:2023 document to a series of documents. See clause “Document transformation overview” for more details.

The IEC 61158-2 series offers easier integration of new types and reduces efforts in maintenance.
