Scope

This document gives background information and examples of national provisions on ERC concrete.

Purpose

The primary purpose of the ERC concept is to link an indicative durability performance to an interdependent measurable property using a test method.

The ERC-concept is innovative because it sets up for now and the future a new process for the way to consider concrete durability in normative commissions. Main contribution of ERC concept is the fact that the methodology developed creates for the first time in concrete sector a coherent link between:

 Feed-back experience, as it is traditionally the case in normative work

 Limit values for the definition of concrete mixes considering two options: deemed to satisfy method or performance-based approach

 Modelling of concrete durability properties, especially the risks of corrosion due to carbonation and chlorides migration.

As EN 206 will not include common European Exposure Resistant Classes, it is therefore up to the various CEN Member States to publish national provisions on ERC to support EN 1992-1-1:2023. The TR that should be to beneficial national standardization bodies (NSBs) when drafting national ERC standards.

Together with the relevant national standard on ERC, this document will also provide background information to potential designers, specifiers, constructors, users and producers of ERC concrete.
