Scope

This document continues the framework for the digital twins (DTw) in the built environment, based on the concepts and definitions established in EN 18162. This document provides a classification schema and defines quality and maturity levels. This document defines the stakeholders of the DTw related to different typologies of assets and defines their technical and ethical requirements.

This document considers the interaction with other BIM standards. It also considers related documents covering topics such as Digital Product Passport (DPP), Geographical Information System (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), Digital Building Permits (DBP) , Digital Building Logbooks (DBL) and data spaces. It also considers the interaction with other DTw domains such as manufacturing, urban or healthcare.

Purpose

The standard FprEN 18162 Building Information Modelling (BIM) - Digital twins applied to the built environment - Concept and definitions provides a general structure for digital twins (DTw) of buildings and infrastructure. However, it does not define a framework capable of supporting construction professionals in their application of the DTw concept. Therefore, WG 9 acknowledged the need for a new standard, defining a framework, which can be used as basis for additional standards covering aspects such as the data reference architecture, the simulation across the construction works lifecycle, and considerations related to ethics and privacy.

The document defines the stakeholders of the DTw and analyses their requirements, considering the output of the CEN/TR 18077:2024 Building information modelling - Digital twins applied to the built environment - Use cases and the documents; and the documents developed or under development at international level, such as ISO/IEC 30152 ED1 IoT and digital twins – Guidance on the connection to data spaces, ISO/IEC 30188 ED1 Digital Twin - Reference architecture or ISO/IEC AWI TS 27568 Security and privacy of digital twins.
