This document specifies a potentiometric titration method for the determination of lithium hydroxide and carbonate content in lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM).
This method is applicable to lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) with a concentration of lithium hydroxide greater than 50% and carbonate content in the range from 0.02% and 2.00%.
Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) has become the preferred source of lithium for some of the higher energy density cathode materials offered in the marketplace. As innovation drives increasing battery performance, purity requirements for upstream materials, such as LHM, have become more stringent. Lithium carbonate impurities in LHM can lead to handling issues, inefficient processes during battery production, off-gassing effects, and other potential problems. Correspondingly, the expectations and requirements in the performance of analytical test methods used to certify the quality of upstream materials has also increased sharply over the recent years. Titration test methods for lithium hydroxide content and lithium carbonate impurity are key components to characterize and monitor LHM product quality.
