It is proposed to revise BS 6262-3 Revision Glazing for buildings - Code of practice for fire, security and wind loading and split the standard into three parts. The scopes of which are detailed below:
BS 6262-3-1: Glazing for buildings - Code of practice for fire This part of BS 6262-3 gives information and recommendations for vertical and sloping glazing used in and about buildings, with respect to fire safety. Information is provided on the reaction to fire and fire resistance performance of glass and plastic glazing sheet materials. These recommendations apply only when the glass is installed in a glazing system specifically designed for the purpose.
These recommendations do not apply to:
a) patent glazing (see BS 5516-1);
b) glazing for commercial greenhouses (see BS 5502-21);
c) glazing for domestic greenhouses.
Requirements for standards of workmanship for glazing have been published separately as BS 8000-7 and, therefore, this subject is not dealt with in this standard.
BS 6262-3-2: Glazing for buildings - Code of practice for security This part of BS 6262-3 gives information and recommendations for vertical and sloping glazing in in and about buildings, with respect to security. Information is provided on the performance of glass and plastic glazing sheet materials when used in applications where a high degree of protection to persons or property is required. This includes resistance against manual attack, ballistics and explosions.
These recommendations apply only when the glass is installed in a glazing system specifically designed for the purpose.
These recommendations do not apply to:
a) patent glazing (see BS 5516-1);
b) glazing for commercial greenhouses (see BS 5502-21);
c) glazing for domestic greenhouses.
Requirements for standards of workmanship for glazing have been published separately as BS 8000-7 and, therefore, this subject is not dealt with in this standard.
BS 6262-3-3: Glazing for buildings - Code of practice for mechanical strength.
This part of BS 6262-3 gives information and recommendations for vertical and sloping glazing used in and about buildings, with respect to mechanical strength. Information is provided on the performance of glass and plastic glazing sheet materials when subjected to loads such as wind, snow, personnel, climate and maintenance. A method is provided for determining the minimum glazing specification for resisting loads applied to the glass. The method is applicable to glazing which is not structurally supporting any other building component.
These recommendations apply only when the glass is installed in a glazing system specifically designed for the purpose.
These recommendations do not apply to:
a) patent glazing (see BS 5516-1);
b) glazing for commercial greenhouses (see BS 5502-21);
c) glazing for domestic greenhouses.
Requirements for standards of workmanship for glazing have been published separately as BS 8000-7 and, therefore, this subject is not dealt with in this standard.
• The standard is now out of date and will need to be revised to cover sloping glazing as well as vertical.
• Needs complete revision to meet current best practice and incorporate relevant parts of BS 5516-2 about sloping glazing.
• Needs to introduce national application of load resistance calculation methodology of BS EN 16612
• Guidance on fire safety, particularly reaction to fire, needs to be aligned with latest requirements
