Scope

This document intends to establish requirements and guidelines for the modification of off-the-shelf (OTS) items related to a space product or system.

In accordance with ISO 21350:2023, this document does not cover piece parts and materials of OTS items, such as electrical, electronic and electromechanical (EEE) parts, thermocouples, rivets, fasteners, connectors, fittings, adhesives, insulation, wiring and plumbing

Purpose

OTS item can meet high-performance requirements, reduce the total lifecycle costs, and shorten the acquisition cycle, making it highly aligned with the future demands of aerospace development. However, OTS items are designed for general-purpose applications with the features that many users require. in many cases, they cannot fully meet all the needed requirements of space utilization. That is why OTS items need to be modified. This document contains requirements and guidelines for the modification of OTS items related to a space product or system. When OTS items need to be modified, the modifications to OTS items should meet the foreseen mechanical environment, thermal environment, electrical performance, RF requirements, EMC requirements, and restricted and prohibited parts requirements. The document can promote the standardization of OTS items modification methods, standardize the modification process of OTS items, and ensure that information about the entire process of modification is traceable. The document will help guide engineers in their modification work, ensuring that OTS items can meet the requirements for use in the space environment while also achieving economic objectives. At the same time, it will simplify the process of mutual recognition during international space cooperation and improve collaboration efficiency.
