With the inclusion of soil nailed structures for the first time within the second generation Eurocodes, there is now a requirement to update BS 8006-2:2011+A1 2017 to ensure compatibility with the new Eurocodes. The update will involve two aspects; 1) update the standard to make it compatible with the Eurocodes, and 2) Improve current content to correct any errors highlighted since the previous 2017 update, improve clarity, expand on existing content where knowledge has improved since the 2017 update, introduce new methods that have become established since 2017.
BS 8006-2:2011+A1 2017 provides recommendations and guidance for the design of soil nailed structures. The code of practice covers applications and construction considerations, suitability, basis for design, and design verification as well as aspects on the construction and maintenance of soil nailed structures. BS 8006-2:2011+A1 2017 is widely acknowledged amongst UK and international practitioners as one of the leading codes of practice for the design of soil nailed structures. This extensive collection of recommendations and guidance is not covered in the Eurocodes and therefore will be lost if BS 8006-2:2011+A1 2017 is not updated to compliment the Eurocodes. This could result in overly conservative and inconsistent design, and with respect to construction, potential delays caused by lack of guidance, information and references to helpful literature. Furthermore, BS 8006-2 is referenced within EN 1997-3 clause 10 and therefore, if it is not updated, EN 1997-3 would reference a document that is not compatible with the core document itself.
