Scope

This document specifies the test method for electrochemically accelerating grooving corrosion of ERW steel pipes by potentiostatic polarization techniques. It standardizes specimen preparation, test solution, temperature, test duration, polarization potential and calculation method of grooving corrosion coefficient. This document provides two methods. Method A is applicable to ERW steel pipes in oil and gas field aggressive environments, while Method B is applicable to those in tap water environments.

Purpose

According to the latest statistics, the growth rate and proportion of welded pipe is much larger than that of seamless pipe, and electric resistance welded (ERW) steel pipes accounts for 80% of the total welded pipe, and is increasingly used because of its advantages of high productivity, low cost, easy automation, less equipment and labour and so on. Survey data shows global ERW steel pipes and tubes market to reach 107.3 million tons by 2030. At present, ERW steel pipe is used in many fields, including tap water system, industrial water, oil and gas pipelines, and other ground transportation pipelines. Combined with ERW welding process and the problems in the service of water system and oilgas fields environment and other aggressive media, it is found that the grooving corrosion in the weld area is a typical failure mode. Research on grooving corrosion has been studied since the 1970s. It has been observed that the dissolution rate at the same potential in pipes where grooving corrosion occurs is greater in welds than in base metal sections. This result is applied to propose a rapid method of electrochemically assessing grooving corrosion. Currently, according to our research on standards, there is no international standard for testing grooving corrosion of ERW steel pipes. In summary, it is essential to draft the international standard for testing method of grooving corrosion of ERW steel pipes. The proposal provides a unified reference for related research, detection/evaluation, quality control, and performance improvement of relevant products to meet the engineering needs of the oil/gas fields, tap water systems and other industries.
