An amendment for Clause 6.4 “Heat resistance test” of EN 50342-5 is needed to match the laboratory endurance requirements of Lead-acid starter batteries to real world vehicle usage.
The current requirement level of 300h “Heat Resistance Test” in EN50342-5 was chosen to reflect an expected lifetime of 8 – 10 years in high temperature environment. This was based on a correlation between lab tests at 150 °C and field test results carried out in Las Vegas in the 1990s. As the installation situation for batteries has changed in recent decades, the temperature profile has also changed. For this reasons it needs to be discussed and agreed if the current requirement level needs to be changed or if additional levels might be added for certain applications.
