Scope

Type 29 data-link layer protocol provides services defined in the data-link layer service specification IEC 61158-3-29 and is used by the application layer protocol specification defined in IEC 61158-6-29.

Type 29 data-link layer protocol elements define the transfer to data between a Type 29 A-Controller and a set of Type 29 A-Nodes using dedicated DL objects in a network which is organized into a set of Type 29 subsections which consists of a sequence of A-Nodes. A Type 29 network can be connected to end stations according to IEEE 802.3 or connected to bridges according to IEEE 802.1 specification.

Purpose

Type 29 is a real-time technology that aims to provide means for time-critical communication that are precise, robust, reliable, and flexible. The protocol provides a reliable network structure and mechanism for real-time information exchange, which ensures precise coordination between industrial automation components as well as integration of existing technologies and applications.
