This British Standard gives recommendations and guidance for the process of conservation of historic and traditional buildings to achieve informed reasonable standards of sustainability, fire safety, resilience, energy efficiency and structural safety. This includes operational care, maintenance, repair and adaptation.
NOTE 1: Historic buildings are those that are designated and held on a statutory list.
NOTE 2: Traditional buildings are those that are solid-wall construction of natural materials including early cavity and older timber-framed buildings.
NOTE 3: Background information on the principles of the conservation of historic buildings and sites is given in BS 7913.
It is not applicable to below ground archaeology or any other type of heritage asset such as movable objects.
The standard will cover the entire process of conservation of historic buildings and include the state of the art and emerging techniques. This new standard will cover: the applicability of British Standards and Approved documents to historical/ traditional construction; objectives of conservation; materials change of use; maintenance; building pathology; reuse of buildings; structural; fire; flood resistance; ventilation; energy efficiency; climate change; health and safety; ecology and the environment; recording; estates; skills and competence.
