Scope
This British Standard specifies the requirements for on-site commissioning and field testing of verifiable Type BA backflow prevention devices (RPZ valves) to confirm correct operation and continued backflow prevention capability.
It does not include requirements for device characteristics, laboratory testing, or criteria for selection, suitability, or installation.
Purpose
The regulations control how water systems are designed, installed, operated and maintained. They require appropriate maintenance and testing to ensure water systems remain safe and backflow protection units continue to keep water systems safe for users and consumers. This must be done in a “workman like manner”.
These regulations define “workman like manner” as an appropriate British Standard or to a method of installation approved by the enforcers of these regulations (the water undertakers).
Currently most water undertakers issue their own approved installation method, which could result in differing approaches to testing and verification methods.
A BS would enable a common method to evolve and be recognised by all water undertakers. It would also enable all parties involved within this sector, enforcers, RPZ valve manufacturers, training organisations and those testing these valves to bring their expertise and participate in developing the methodologies needed to verify these devices.
