Rattan is a natural material used extensively in the production of furniture. Utilizing rattan provides significant environmental benefits compared to synthetic materials, as rattan is a renewable resource that can be sustainably harvested. Rattan can be used to create durable, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing furniture pieces. Despite its advantages, the use of rattan in furniture production has been limited due to the lack of standardized quality assurance and production guidelines.
The proposed ISO standard aims to address these issues by providing clear production and qualification requirements for rattan used in furniture. This will help designers, manufacturers, and consumers by ensuring consistent quality and promoting sustainable practices in the industry. By establishing this standard, we aim to enhance the reliability and market acceptance of rattan furniture, ultimately contributing to sustainable development goals.
Goal 1: No Poverty
Promotes sustainable livelihoods for rural communities by creating income opportunities for rattan farmers and small-scale furniture producers.
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Expands local employment in harvesting, processing, and manufacturing rattan furniture, supporting safe and fair jobs while fostering economic growth in producing regions.
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Encourages the development of sustainable furniture industries, innovation in eco-friendly design and processing technologies, and improvements in supply chain infrastructure.
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Provides a renewable, biodegradable alternative to plastic or non-sustainable materials in the furniture sector, encouraging circular economy practices and reducing waste.
Goal 13: Climate Action
Rattan cultivation contributes to carbon sequestration and reduces pressure on forests by offering an alternative to timber, thereby helping mitigate climate change.
Goal 15: Life on Land
Supports biodiversity and sustainable land use, as rattan is often grown in forest-based agroforestry systems that help conserve ecosystems and protect soil health.
