Scope

This part is addressed to users and developers of software systems in industrial automation. The standard is a decision aid when development or application of multi-agent systems in industrial automation is being considered. It also provides basic information and a standard concept as to what exactly agents are, and how agent- oriented industrial automation systems can be realised in a systematic manner.

Purpose

The increasing ubiquity of Artificial Intelligence has reignited interest in agent and multi-agent systems as key technology towards general artificial intelligence, for example, with Agentic AI and LLM-driven applications being implemented across the board. The availability of standards is a lever to foster and facilitate the industrial adoption of cutting-edge research and technology. This project proposes a series that provides a comprehensive, holistic approach to agents in industrial automation systems. It will provide an overview of the fundamentals, development methods, implementation patterns, quality indicators, and applications. Including the latest technologies, it will be valuable to every industrial company that tries to implement such technologies and has the potential for a very successful industrial adoption.
