This document specifies a method for the determination of the amount of 2,3-Butanedione as their 2,4- Dinitrophenylhydrazones in E-liquids of vapour products by HPLC-UV/ DAD.
2,3-Butanedione (diacetyl) is a typical flavor compound. It potentially causes diseases when inhaled, including bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, obliterative bronchiolitis, or impaired lung function. 2,3- Butanedione is on the list of substances which should be controlled in e-liquids in many countries, such as China (SAC, GB 41700, with a maximum allowable concentration of 22.0 mg/kg in e-liquid) and France (AFNOR, XP D 90-300-2, with a maximum allowable concentration of 22 mg/L in e-liquid). Because of the potential undesirable effects of 2,3-butanedione on health and safety of vapour products, the development of an adequate and validated analytical method for quantification of 2,3- butanedione in e-liquids in vapour products is highly necessary for quality control of vapour products. HPLC have been proved to be a reliable, accurate, and reproducible method for determination of 2,3- butanedione in e-liquids by a derivatization reaction with acidified solution of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). The proposed method can be applied by academic bodies, industries and regulators, not only for quality control of vapour products, but also for supervision and regulation purposes.
