Scope

As suggested by BSI very long ago and noticed during working on the revision of EN 12392 (comments from SNV come from this activity), some definitions mentioned in EN 12258-1 need to be updated and/or corrected.

Besides, EN 12392 is currently at Enquiry stage, with integration of comments from NSBs and the HAS consultant, EN 12392 being a harmonized Standard. A quick implementation of corrections to EN 12258-1 could be beneficial for EN 12392, with definitions from EN 12258-1 not needing to be corrected anymore.

Purpose

This document defines general terms relating to products of aluminium and aluminium alloys which are helpful for communication within the aluminium industry and with its customers.

It includes terms dealing with aluminium products, processing, sampling and testing, product characteristics and different types of visual quality characteristics.

It does not include terms dealing with bauxite mining, alumina and anode production and aluminium smelting.

This document tries to adhere as closely as possible to the terms and definitions used in other standards or documents.

NOTE For materials other than aluminium, different definitions can apply to terms which are defined in this document.

This document tries to follow the "common language" as it is used in native English speaking countries, without giving preference to specific idioms of any one of these counties. In cases where in different English-speaking countries different terms are used for the same concept or different concepts refer to an identical term, the appropriate explanations are given.
