- Risk assessment criteria, bunkering zones requirements (such as hazardous areas, safety zones, toxic areas/spaces, monitoring zones, security zones)
- Emergency procedures
- Simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) requirements
- Training and competency
The shipping industry is actively exploring solutions to meet more stringent regulatory requirements, which is supported by the announcement by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work, as an average across international shipping, by at least 40% by 2030 and pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050 as compared to 2008, as well as to reduce the total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. To support the decarbonisation of the global maritime industry, international ships are transiting to use low carbon fuels such as ammonia as marine fuel. Currently, there is no industry standard for Ammonia bunker operation. This proposed document aims to provide guidance to global maritime industry on application of ammonia bunkering in a safe and efficient manner. The proposed document is intended to address toxicity concerns of ammonia impacting the personnel safety during the ammonia bunkering operation or accidental release.
