Scope
This British Standard gives general recommendations for tree work.
It gives guidance on management options for established trees (including soil care and tree felling) and overgrown hedges.
NOTE The principles of this standard may be applied to some shrubs, which can have similar characteristics to trees.
This British Standard does not give guidance on carrying out tree surveys or tree inspections. It considers the impact of work on an individual tree in relation to neighbouring trees, but does not cover overall management of tree populations.
Purpose
The standard will be fully revised, including major updates to all sections, including Section 4 Tree work safety and planning; Section 5 Scheduling tree works; Section 6 Management of the rooting environment; Section 7 Pruning and related work; Section 8 Treatment of wounds and other injuries; Section 9 Management of decay - cavities and other water pockets; Section 10 Management of weak structures; Section 11 Other attachments to trees; Section 12 Tree felling and stump management; Section 13 Completion of work; Annexes A, B, C, D.
Important edits to all sections to address climate change affecting tree work will be made, addressing UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 on Climate Action. To include a new section covering tree arisings management, prioritising environmental sustainability, including processing wood chips for mulching, landscaping, and other uses. The overall language and structure of the standard to be improved – making it more accessible to wider audiences. To include:
Additional guidance on utilization and retention of arisings.
Introduce a section on ecological/conservation arboriculture.
Additional guidance on multiple aspects of modern arboriculture: ecological arboriculture, veteran trees, decision making, who how what when?
