This series of documents would cover requirements and test methods for efficient and safe handling and storage of many different types of assistive technologies (AT) for passengers with mobility impairments on aircraft.
This is currently a US RESNA project, but it is really only valuable if it is applied at both ends of a journey, and thus is more likely to be adopted internationally if it is an International set of documents. The text of Part 4 is already available, focusing on labelling and design requirements for mobility devices designed for stowage and transport in commercial aircraft. This section does not require air travel features on all mobility devices, but provides design and labelling specifications for various types of mobility devices that, when implemented, will make devices easier to prepare for travel and less likely to be damaged when traveling on commercial aircraft. Other countries, apart from the US, such as Japan and the UK have been addressing these challenges, and the international wheelchair community would benefit from bringing together international experience.
