Scope

This document specifies geometry, mass and testing for individual aircraft cabin baggage carried on board by passengers.

This document does not apply to pieces of baggage checked in by airline passengers at airports to be carried in aircraft cargo compartments. Checked baggage is specified in ISO 12604-1.

Purpose

The aim of this document is:

a) to achieve globally accepted standard pieces of luggage;

b) to enable optimization of stowage compartments;

c) to encounter automation and digitalization of luggage handling processes, including electronic transmission of data.

Similar to ISO 21100 this document provides a technical reference for a set of unit devices of baggage characterized mainly by its size and weight. As a pattern, e.g. two smaller devices replacing exactly one big one will simplify the categorization of the devices, see Figure 1. This will apply for size and weight as well.

In light of the recent ban of EU on handling extra charges on hand luggage, this project also has political relevance. Having more clearly defined rules for what constitutes hand luggage benefits consumer through increased transparency and can also benefit airlines and operators with a fairer and more efficient system.
