Scope

A new revision for EN 50342-1 needs to be prepared to cover following topics: - Solve contradictions concerning test sequence and pass / fail criteria for pre testing - Add Annex ZZ to harmonize test procedure for capacity determination according Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 - Adapt marking requirements to European Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 - Add new annex with an optional test high heat cycling test procedure (HTE-Test)

Purpose

The test sequence and the pass / fail criteria of the pre-test sequence (Capacity / Cold cranking performance) are not unambiguous and offer unintended room for interpretation. To be able to harmonize the capacity test procedure this needs to be fixed. Marking requirements listed in EN 50342-1 are based on European Directives (EU) 2006/66 and (EU) 2010/1103 and need to be adopted to new European Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. The new high heat cycling test procedure is a new approach to judge the cycling capabilities and water consumption of lead batteries in modern vehicle usage. It does not show the disadvantages of the former procedures and might replace water consumption testing later. Annex ZZ is needed to harmonize capacity test procedure of EN 503421-1 for lead SLI batteries as requested by regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and M579.
