IEC 62396-11 provides guidance on atmospheric radiation effects on avionics electronics used in aircraft operating at altitudes up to 60 000 ft (18,3 km). It defines the radiation environment, the effects of that environment on electronics and provides design considerations for the accommodation of those effects within avionics systems. This International Standard helps aerospace equipment manufacturers and designers to standardize their approach to single event effects in avionics by providing guidance, leading to a standard methodology. This includes significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition which was IEC 62396-1 and is the first in a new series which revises and consolidates the previous IEC 62396-1 to -8 series into 4 new parts i.e. IEC 62396-11, -12, -13 and -14, where a cross refence matrix from the old series to the new series will be included for information purposes.
This is a revision of IEC 62396-1 and is the first part of a new series , starting at IEC 62396-11, whereby the existing 8 parts of the current series are condensed into 4 new parts starting at -11.
