This document defines the technical and safety requirements applicable to gangway systems used in all railway vehicles such as tram, tram trains, coaches, metro, suburban, main line and high speed trains that carry passengers. A gangway system gives comfortable passage from one vehicle to the other and consists of a flexible component which allows relative movement between vehicles. It also defines:
— the requirements for the safety for passengers and/or staff in the gangway while the train is running;
— the assessment methods as well as pass/fail criteria for gangways installed on vehicles.
Gangway system is a flexible connecting component between two vehicles. This component accommodates all relative movements between two vehicles by its design and allows the passage from one vehicle to the next vehicle. It shall have air tightness performance to protect the vehicle against impact of dirt, dust, water and snow. It shall have good acoustic insulation and thermal insulation. It shall have curve negotiating ability to meet the requirements of the vehicle passing through the curve with minimum radius.
Gangway systems have been used world widely, such as China, Japan, French, Germany. Its technical status is mature and stable. There is no ISO standard at present. Regions or countries perform its own domestic standard or regional standard of gangway systems.
The differences of standards bring many problems to the technical requirements, operation and maintenance of gangway systems, and cause material waste in long-term use.
Take the essence and discard the dregs of existing standards, then issue an ISO standard will solve above-mentioned problems. The purpose of this standard is to establish a unified technical requirements and test methods of gangway systems. Its benefits are shown below:
1.The development of international standards can eliminate the difference between regional standards and reduce the design cost and maintenance cost of products.
2.Promote locomotive and rolling stock gangway systems products to meet international requirements and ensure product quality.
3.The development of international standards for locomotive and rolling stock gangway systems can provide a platform for international technical exchange for all relevant parties.
