Scope
Editorial changes have been made to the Scope given in EN 15384-2:2017; no technical changes have been made.
This document describes the copper sulphate test method for detecting the electrolyte conductivity of internally coated cylindrical or conical aluminium tubes.
It is applicable to aluminium tubes that are used for the packing of pharmaceutical, cosmetic, hygiene, food or other household products.
The internal coating is used as a barrier between the aluminium and the product. The electrolyte conductivity of the internal coating is only one criterion for evaluating the quality of the internal coating of an aluminium tube. It does not give any information on the quantity or size of any pores or uncoated areas nor the possible reactions between the aluminium tube and the product. The electrolyte conductivity is not designed to be used as the sole criterion for quality evaluation of the internal coating, but is designed to be used in conjunction with other parameters, e.g. film thickness, acetone and/or ammonia resistance and the results of enhanced stability studies.
Purpose
With regard to the scope, the standard is extended to cylindrical and conical aluminium tubes. In addition, the end-use markets of aluminium tubes are more generally defined.
For conical tubes the defined distance between the tube’s end and the electrolyte should be extended to at least 15 mm.
It should be clarified that the tolerances given in Table 2 are only valid for standard tubes and not for tubes with additional treatment such as sterilization.
