PNW TS 4-533 ED1: TECHNICAL GUIDE FOR THE DEFINITION AND OPERATION OF WATERWAYS SAFETY DEVICES

Scope

Technical guide on the definition, installation and operation of hydraulic safety devices for hydro power plants. The purpose of this new proposal is to contribute to the hydro community by putting together the state-of-the-art know-how and innovative technologies.

Purpose

The definition, installation and operation of hydraulic safety devices have been developed altogether with the rise of hydropower. These devices are positioned at specific locations along the waterway, and they play different roles, depending on the events during which they have been designed to operate. Numerous references exist regarding the design of such devices, but there are few shared documents as to their operation and maintenance.

The main objective is to write a technical guide to ensure the highest possible reliability of these safety devices during their lifetime, promoting hydropower as a highly reliable and mature technology.
