Scope

This document specifies the impact performance test methods for load-bearing components (including tubes, connectors, and platforms) of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) small modular scaffolds within the temperature range of -40 to 0.

This document applies to glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) or carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites used in load-bearing components of small modular scaffolds, such as uprights, ledgers, and platforms.

Purpose

With the extensive application of fibre - reinforced composite materials (such as GFRP/CFRP) in small combination structures, their performance in cold regions and low - temperature environments like cold stores has become a key concern. Within the temperature range of - 40 to 0, the impact performance of load - bearing components (including pipes and platforms) may change significantly, thus affecting the safety and reliability of the structures. In January 2024, in Mohe, China (around 50° N), with the outdoor temperature at - 36, the project team carried out a drop impact test on a small combination structure made of fibre - reinforced composite materials. The results showed that several upright rods at the top of the structure broke.

At present, many technical standards for small combination structures have been released internationally, covering product performance, test methods and dimensional requirements. However, none of them involve low - temperature impact test methods for such materials used in these structures. This leads to inconsistent product quality, lack of scientific basis for low - temperature performance evaluation, and restricts the high - quality development and market expansion of the related industry.

This proposal aims to develop an ISO/TS document specifying the impact test methods for load bearing components (including upright rods, cross rods, platforms and joints) made of glass fibre/carbon - fibre - reinforced polymer - based composite materials in small combination structures within the temperature range of - 40 to 0. It is hoped to fill the existing standard gap and provide a unified, scientific and operable low - temperature impact test guideline for the design, production, inspection, certification and procurement of relevant products worldwide.
