BS 8298-2 rev: Design and installation of natural stone cladding and lining - Part 2: Traditional handset external cladding - Code of practice

Scope

The existing scope (which follows) will not fundamentally change but updates are required to reflect new technologies and clarification to existing guidance.

Existing scope:

Gives recommendations for the design, installation and maintenance of traditional handset external cladding of natural stone held directly to a structural backing structure by metal fixings.

It covers:
- the sampling of stone for testing and production control testing (PCT);
- the provisions necessary for the cladding to perform its function satisfactorily;
- the materials and methods most frequently used for stonework; and
- the use of thermal insulation behind external cladding.

Loadbearing masonry or cladding held only by adhesion is not covered, nor is any type of cladding supported or held in position around the perimeter of stones or series of stones by metal framing (e.g. rainscreen). This document is not applicable to seismic loading or enhanced security scenarios (such as blast).

Purpose

Minor revision is needed to the 2020 edition of the standard to incorporate new types of fixing and anchor which are now available in the market and to address any practical aspects of fixing which have become outdated and could potentially be a health and safety concern. The illustrations also require updating and some of the guidance provided contains contradictions which would benefit from clarification.

The aim is to produce an updated text which allows professionals to access detailed guidance on the design, production, and installation of cladding so they can select the appropriate stone and avoid in-service failures while ensuring the highest safety standards are being achieved.
