Scope

Basic terms and parameters related to macro- and megatexture measurement will be described in the document, as well as a classification of profilometers with respect to their precision, bandwidth and measurement speed. Further the new standard will describe a series of performance requirements which should be met and a number of tests which should be carried out by the users of laser profilometers on a regular basis in order to verify the proper function of their apparatus. The new standard will also include an informative annex describing how an enveloped profile can be calculated, as well as annexes describing how to deal with invalid readings and how to detect and eliminate erroneous spikes in the profile. Part 6 is a PAS and must be converted to at least a TS 2028. The merging of Part 2, 3 and 6 will therefore also handle the necessary changes required to make former Part 6 more usable with limits and requirements.

Purpose

The goal is to draft a new, comprehensive standard, comprising all the subjects nowadays covered by the existing standards ISO 13473-2; ISO 13473-3 and ISO/PAS 13473-6. The new standard is intended to replace the mentioned standards and PAS. The standard supports the other standards in this series, namely ISO 13473-1 describing the measurement of the “Mean Profile Depth”, which is a parameter highly relevant for skid resistance and rolling resistance, ISO 13473-4 and ISO 13473-5 which are relevant for the understanding of acoustic quality of road surfaces. The description of a simple yet accurate procedure for the calculation of the enveloped profile (the “indentor method” developed in the frame of the EU FP7 project “ROSANNE”) will enhance the design of models able to predict the acoustic quality and the rolling resistance of pavements, solely based on their texture. These models, once proven to be robust and reliable, will make the assessment of new and existing pavements much quicker and easier and hence cheaper.
