This document specifies a classification framework and terminology for driving simulators. The application of the framework and the specification of the driving simulator requirements depending on different applications are the responsibility of the user.
This document is applicable to human-in-the-loop driving simulators and explicitly addresses passenger car simulators.
There is a need for a systematic description of driving simulators because:
- Driving simulators increasingly replace testing in real-world conditions as part of virtual validation.
- Simulators are highly specified depending on the area of use (e.g., high-frequency motion systems for vehicle dynamics simulation).
- In order to fully utilise the capacities of driving simulators, an understanding of which driving simulator is suitable for what context of use must be achieved
- Operators of driving simulators need a standard to organise their requirements and plan resources accordingly.
- A common standard can be used to compare driving simulators used in validation and user studies.
- The standard will allow for easier and more purposeful communication of requirements and offers between simulator manufacturers and users.
