Scope

This document specifies a method for the determination of selected perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater using liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS).

Purpose

For the implementation of the recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive ((EU)2024/3019) the Commission is requred to adopt implementing acts in order to establish a methodology for measuring ‘PFAS Total’ and ‘Sum of PFAS’ in urban wastewater.

To provide a method which can be implemented by the EU member states, CEN/TC 230/WG 1 will develop a new EN standard to determine PFAS based on the method specified in EN 17892:2024 "Water quality Determination of selected per and polyfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water Method using liquid chromatography/tandemmass spectrometry (LCMS/MS)" and to modify the method for the matrix wastewater.
