Scope

This document specifies two categories of methods for the determination of the ethylene content of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers, for use in the designation of such copolymers according to ISO 21309-1. One category is referred to as “reference method”, the other as “test methods”. The “reference methods” are used to calibrate the method used for the determination of the ethylene content of EVOH copolymers.

The “test methods” are other methods which can be used for the determination if they are calibrated using the reference methods described in Clause 4, provided they show a certain permissible repeatability.

This document is applicable to copolymers of ethylene and vinyl alcohol containing from 15 mol % to 60 mol % of ethylene. It applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or pellets, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc.

This document is not applicable to mixtures of EVOH with other polymers or fillers.

Purpose

Recently, growing interest is witnessed in the development of new materials for packaging applications, especially the barrier materials. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) is random copolymers containing ethylene and vinyl alcohol groups distributed along the chains. Because of their excellent gas barrier properties, they are commercial materials with applications mainly in food packaging. The increase in practical applications in food packaging has also brought about gradual expansion into other fields such as containers, pipes, and construction materials for surface application. The vinyl alcohol copolymer mainly contributed to the oxygen barrier due to its small free volume in between molecules and the ethylene copolymer prevented the polymer from dissolving in water and increased its processability. EVOH has both the barrier properties of polyvinyl alcohol and the processing properties of polyethylene. So, ethylene content is an important property index of copolymer. ISO 21309-2:2019 has an ANNAX providing a method to determinate ethylene content, but there are some disadvantages:
