It provides a unified definition of the term "Smart Pallet," which varies across regions and industries, and classifies Smart Pallets into grades based on their level of smartness and functionality. This will cover only for flat pallets specified in ISO 445.
Purpose: The purpose of this standard is to provide a clear and harmonized definition of the term “Smart Pallet”, which has been used inconsistently across countries and industries. It establishes a standardized terminology and a three-grade classification system based on the degree of SMART capabilities. In addition, this standard specifies the functional requirements for IoT-based systems integrated into Smart Pallets, enabling real-time monitoring and enhanced supply chain management.
Justification:
1. Terminology Consistency: A standardized definition ensures a shared understanding among stakeholders as diverse interpretations of “Smart Pallet” across regions hinder communication and collaboration.
2. Technological benefits: Enables interoperability, modularity, and data-driven innovation
3. Economic benefits: Reduces costs, improves efficiency, and opens new markets
4. Societal benefits: Enhances safety, equity, and digital participation
5. Environmental benefits: Reduces waste, supports circular logistics, and cuts emissions
