It is applicable to painted and unpainted bamboo mat, including bamboo mat for beds, cushions, pillows and carpets made of bamboo sticks, bamboo slivers and bamboo blocks as the main elements.
Bamboo mat is widely used in Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, Africa and other countries/regions. Based on the database from International Organization of Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR), trade in bamboo mat products reached $85 million in 2022. The processing units of bamboo mat are diversified, which can be bamboo sticks or bamboo block. Therefore, different kinds of bamboo units on diameter levels can be used as raw materials to maximize the utilization of bamboo resources. As a household item commonly used for cooling in summer, the quality and safety of bamboo mats directly affect the health and even personal safety of consumers, such as excessive formaldehyde, poor color fastness quality, bamboo thorn stabbing, skin allergic reaction and other product quality problems. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the relevant product standards. To date, there is no international standard. China, the main producer of bamboo mat, has published the industry standard LY/T 1843-2009 "Bamboo Mat" and the national standard GB/T 38780-2020 "Bamboo Mat", which improve and standardize the production quality control of bamboo mat products, unify the quality inspection basis of products, and protect the interests of consumers. It has played a positive and effective role on the development of bamboo mat. However, some test item set in the standard, such as appearance quality, physical and chemical performance testing methods, are not in consistence with international standards, especially safety requirements, which will not be conducive to the international trade of bamboo mat products. Hence, it is essential to formulate an international standard for bamboo mat products to provide effective guidance to manufacturers, consumers, and industrial enterprises. By the way, the increase of international trade on bamboo mat can promote more and more countries to reduce plastic pollution and combate climate change, which can accelerate the implementation of the active active act of the United Nations in 2030 Sustainable Development Aired agenda.
